London Fire Brigade and Sherlock the Fire Dog Visit TLC

TLC The Learning Centre, a Special Educational Needs school in Bromley, welcomed Paul Jennings, former Assistant Commissioner at the London Fire Brigade, along with Sherlock the Fire Dog, for an engaging and educational visit as part of the school’s focus on British Institutions.

During the visit, learners discovered how the fire service operates across London, learned about the path to becoming a firefighter, and explored the incredible work carried out by the Brigade. Learners were able to try on historical fire helmets from Paul’s career and receive London Fire Brigade merchandise, adding a hands-on element to the experience.

A highlight of the morning was meeting Sherlock, London’s longest-serving fire dog. Sherlock, who is 100 years old in dog years, had an outstanding career as a Fire Investigation Dog, attending hundreds of incidents including the Grenfell Fire, meeting members of the Royal Family, and receiving an Animal Hero Award. Now retired, Sherlock serves as a Brigade Ambassador, teaching children and adults how to stay safe and prevent fires.

Helen Dyer, Principal of TLC, said:

“Our learners were captivated by Paul and Sherlock’s visit. It was not only fun and interactive but also gave them valuable insights into the vital work of the Fire Brigade. Moments like this inspire curiosity, courage, and a sense of civic responsibility.”

The visit also highlighted opportunities for young people to engage with the Fire Cadets programme, encouraging learners to explore teamwork, leadership, and community service through the London Fire Brigade.
