Wellbeing and Mental Health

Wellbeing and Mental Health at TLC The Learning Centre

We are committed to providing all our learners with rich and diverse experiences which promote their wellbeing, as well as their personal and social development.

We know that in order to secure positive outcomes for our learners, promoting and prioritising positive mental health is essential.

We are proud to work with experienced Speech and Language and Occupational Therapists who work on site two days per week. We also have a qualified Counsellor who offers 1:1 counselling sessions to ensure the maximum positive impact on learner’s emotional wellbeing and resilience. Our Counsellor also offers a ‘drop-in’ service for those who feel the need to talk occasionally, or who are unsure about whether counselling is for them.

We have a school Wellbeing Lead who is there to support learners and our staff team. Our Wellbeing Champion manages a number of initiatives designed to promote a healthy and proactive environment, and to create a sense of community and belonging for all members of the school community.  Our Principal, Helen Dyer is the school’s Senior Mental Health Lead. She is certified by Trauma Informed Schools and is a trained Mental Health First Aider.  A number of other staff members are also Mental Health First Aid trained.

Other support initiatives include wellbeing surveys, and an anonymous ‘Leave it Behind’ box. This enables young people to write down and express worries and concerns so that they don’t take them home. We also have access to Melrose Education’s ‘we are listening’ email address, student and staff wellbeing sessions, as well as taking part in environmental and community projects.

Our summer Transition Days and other holiday schemes, including weekly holiday wellbeing calls, all contribute to ensuring our learners, staff and families feel safe, and are able to come to us should they need anything.

We can, and do, make referrals to many local services for our families to access support, including frequently to Bromley Y and Bromley Children’s Project.

Young Minds

“We know parenting isn’t always easy. Although it’s often amazing and rewarding to watch your children grow up, and to help them learn to be independent, it can also be really hard work. It can feel especially hard if your child’s mood and behaviour seem different and you’re not sure why, or what you can do to help. But you are not alone.” (Young Minds 2020)
