The School Day and Term Dates

The school opens at 8:30am and our day begins with transitions from transport and breakfast club. Learners have form time with their Tutors from 8:45am with structured lessons beginning at 9.00am and ending at 2.45pm. Break is from 11:00am until 11:15am, and, lunch from 1:15pm until 1:45pm. Learners take part in assembly or other class activities from 2:45pm until the end of the school day at 3:00pm.

The school day comprises of five, 1 hour lessons each day. These include, maths, English, ICT, science, history, geography, PSHE, RSE, PE, Music, Expressive Arts, Social Skills as well as vocational programmes such as bike mechanics, hair and beauty and food. These lessons are taught on rotation in small groups, ranging from 4 children to 10 children in a class. Our skilled staff work to support learners with personalised learning interventions, including for core subjects, and also for handwriting, social skills and emotional development.

Learners can also access therapeutic sessions with a trained counsellor, and work with Speech and Language and Occupational Therapists. Pastoral interventions are woven into the school day through whole class, small group work and one-to-one sessions depending on the individual needs of the child.

We proudly partner with local charities and organisations to deliver more intensive, support where required, including, ‘Living On Bereavement’ who support learners who have experienced loss and bereavement on a 1-2-1 basis, as well as group drama therapy. We also work with Smiths Sports Academy who provide youth mentoring throughout the week, Bromley and Downham Boxing Club who provide mentoring and boxing activities, and Bromley Children & Families Forum who provide specialist funding for various programmes, including our mentoring programme which is funded by The Mayor of London’s Propel initiative.

We are trained in Proact SCIPr which is a specialist behavioural, emotion-informed, and pro-active approach which focuses on supporting children and young people’s behaviour.

Each learner at our school has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), which is tailored to their specific needs and includes things such as developing citizenship, interests such as sports and art, and life skills like road safety.

Snack and lunch times are structured and supervised with a focus on healthy eating and independence. Learners are encouraged to join lunchtime clubs that offer extra-curricular learning and an opportunity to socialise with other year groups. Our lunch time clubs include, gaming, music and our 71 Club (LGBQT+). Break times are seen as important learning moments to develop social and other skills.

Food at TLC The Learning Centre

Learners bring a packed lunch to school each day and we provide breakfast and snacks.

We pay particular attention to a balanced and healthy diet, using fresh ingredients wherever possible. We are able to accommodate specific dietary needs such as allergies and cultural requirements.

Uniform

Learners at our school wear black trousers or skirts, with a white polo top or shirt, plain black blazer, and black shoes. Blazers with a logo, and ties are available but are not compulsory. Trainers are permitted to ensure children’s comfort.

We do not allow learners to wear hoodies, hats, heavy jewellery, jeans, sandals or open toe/slider shoes. We ask for learners to be dressed appropriately for activity on the days they have PE, e.g., black/navy tracksuit and trainers.

We are able to provide uniform for families who are unable to afford to purchase it themselves. Please contact the school for further information if this is applicable.
