TLC Introduces Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Wednesday Tutor Times

TLC The Learning Centre, a Special Educational Needs school in Bromley, has introduced dedicated Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Wednesday Tutor Times as part of its ongoing commitment to inclusive education and British Values across TLC and the wider Melrose group.

Every Wednesday morning, learners and staff take part in structured EDI sessions during Tutor Time, exploring important social topics in a safe, supportive, and educational environment. The programme is led by TLC’s EDI Lead, Richard, who carefully researches and provides resources including videos, worksheets, and discussion prompts to support meaningful learning and thoughtful debate.

The sessions reflect TLC’s commitment to respect and tolerance, with regular reference to the nine protected characteristics outlined in the Equality Act 2010. Topics explored this term have included Holocaust Remembrance, Disability Awareness Week, Racism, Sex, Gender and Sexual Orientation, and Martin Luther King Day.

On 15th January, TLC marked Martin Luther King Day with a dedicated assembly alongside Tutor Time activities. Learners presented their own “Dreams” for themselves, for TLC, and for the wider world, paying tribute to Dr King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.

Helen Dyer, Principal of TLC, said:

“These sessions give our learners the opportunity to explore complex and relevant issues in a way that is respectful, balanced, and appropriate. Supporting young people to understand the world around them is a vital part of helping them grow into confident, informed citizens.”

By embedding EDI into the weekly timetable, TLC ensures that learners leave not only with academic knowledge and qualifications, but also with the values, awareness, and confidence needed to engage positively with society.
