Helen Dyer – Principal

I am extremely proud to be the Principal of TLC The Learning Centre, having  been in role here since August 2022. TLC is a unique and amazing place where we provide educational and social development opportunities for children who have previously had a really tough time in education and continue to face many challenges in their lives.

I moved into the education sector in 2022 after 20+ years in the private and third sector, and 18 years as CEO of Bromley Autism Charity CASPA.  I spent a large amount of time in this previous role supporting children, young people, and families with special educational needs, in their school and educational placements. This included running inclusion, autism and neurodiversity training with teachers, educators, senior leaders and Heads and fighting for our SEN children to be properly included in the school system.

I am passionate about ensuring all children and young people feel worthy, understand themselves and reach their full potential. With its small cohort and fantastic resources, TLC is one of the few schools where I think this is possible for some of the most vulnerable, complex and previously excluded children in the borough of Bromley.

My wonderful colleagues at TLC are all committed to carrying out our vision of creating a school which values inclusivity, and provides exceptional educational and personal development opportunities for our pupils, enabling them to overcome barriers, gain self-worth, acquire cultural capital, become independent and ultimately take a meaningful place in society.

We have developed a wide and balanced curriculum and are focused on ensuring that all children have the learning experiences that they need, be this more hands-on, practical and vocational, or academic/classroom based.  Alongside all of the core subjects, we offer, music, PE, humanities and science, and vocational qualifications in Hair and Beauty and Bike Mechanics.

I am proud of the school’s community ethos and our partnerships with local charities and other local organisations. These partnerships provide mentoring and sports coaching and provide numerous additional opportunities for the learners at our school.  It is my goal to keep developing our beautiful school so that we can continue improving the learning experiences for our incredible children and young people.

I have learned an immense amount from the children, families and staff at TLC and I am honoured to lead such a fantastic school and be a part of Melrose Education.
