TLC The Learning Centre Celebrates Diversity and Promotes Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

TLC The Learning Centre is committed to celebrating its diverse community and fostering an inclusive environment for all. On 9th October, the school held a special Navaratri assembly to honour the important Hindu festival dedicated to the goddess Durga, an embodiment of Adi Parashakti, the supreme goddess. Led by Science Teacher Geetha, the assembly featured a vibrant celebration where learners shared facts about Navaratri, wore traditional Hindu clothing, danced to cultural music, and enjoyed sweet treats.

In addition to the Navaratri celebration, October marks Black History Month, and TLC is actively engaging students in learning activities aligned with the 2024 theme, “Reclaiming Narratives.” This theme highlights the importance of amplifying Black voices and stories, addressing historical inaccuracies, and bringing attention to the untold achievements and rich heritage of Black individuals. By reclaiming these narratives, the school aims to honor Black heroes and challenge the narratives that have often overlooked the contributions of Black communities, both in the UK and worldwide.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion are integral to the culture at TLC, where mutual respect and tolerance are consistently promoted. The school’s Principal, Helen, serves as the Melrose ED&I Lead, while the school’s ED&I Lead, Ismael, also holds the role of Behaviour Lead. Both Helen and Ismael are active members of the Melrose Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Forum, which brings together representatives from all 11 Melrose schools to ensure that ED&I practices are prioritized and implemented across the network of schools.

Helen emphasizes that “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are at the heart of how high-quality education should be delivered to all learners. At TLC, there is a strong commitment to celebrating the many aspects of the richly diverse community, ensuring that everyone feels included.”
