“My daughter spent years out of school and the times she did attend school she had many negative experiences and traumas. Despite my ongoing battles with the LA she was then placed in a mainstream secondary school where it all went horribly wrong. Subsequently my daughter hit rock bottom, the lowest I had ever seen her. She spent a further year out of school where she didn’t want to see anyone and would barely come out of her bedroom. It was impossible for her to imagine how she would ever move forward.
I desperately searched many SEN schools, trying to find a school that I could imagine her attending, the right place to reengage her and encourage her back in to education.
I heard about TLC and I arranged a visit to meet Helen Dyer.
As soon as I walked in to TLC I knew that it was the right place for my daughter. There was a welcoming environment. It was small and not at all overwhelming. The staff were warm and friendly, the young people said hello to me and I could really feel a sense of community.
When I spoke to Helen, she was so down to earth, as she spoke she showed real empathy and I really felt that she understood our situation. I had been through such a long battle fighting for my daughter to access education that it was quite overwhelming to finally feel listened to and understood. I felt so excited about the prospect of my daughter attending TLC and I couldn’t wait to bring her along to meet Helen. I wanted to show my daughter that there were places out there where she would fit in and would feel part of. I felt confident that this could be the way forward for her.
My daughter immediately connected with Helen due to Helen’s warm and non judgemental approach. I watched as my daughter chatted away to Helen, my daughter was enthusiastic, animated and engaged, something I had not seen in a long time, I could really feel her excitement about TLC and it was so refreshing to witness!
It was also so wonderful for both my daughter and I to see that Helen recognised the potential in her, where many other educators had only noticed her struggles.
My daughter has been attending TLC for over a year now. She loves the entire TLC team. She feels understood and listened to and most of all she trusts them.
The staff at TLC really go above and beyond to get the best results from your child. They are great at communicating with parents and they approach the well being and development of your child together with you, as a team. I feel that we all have the same aims and we work together for my child as opposed to my previous experience of feeling isolated, battling against the system, to help her access education.
Both my daughter and I feel listened to and fully supported. The TLC staff team genuinely want your child to achieve and grow and they work tirelessly to support your child. Crucially, they understand how much extra support your child needs, both academically and emotionally, when they have had so many gaps and negative experiences in their educational journey. This unique approach that the TLC staff team have provided has helped to heal my daughter and rewrite her educational experience to the extent that she now wants to go to school and she feels positive about her future.”
